Xiom 1000 - The Gun That Protects Your World!
How is Xiom Changing the Powder Coating Industry?
With Xiom 1000, powder coating is no longer a labor intensive process. Traditional powder coating is actually a series of processes—surface preparation, powder application, heating of the part, curing of the coating.
Preparing the surface ensures that the surface is dirt- and rust-free and may include washing or blasting. When thermoplastic powders are used, a primer is normally applied to promote adhesion of the powder coatings. With thermoset powders, the part to be coated needs to be electrostatically charged to ensure adhesion. The coated part is then cured or baked in an oven so that the powder melts and flows into a smooth, solid layer.
In the past two decades, powder coating revolutionized the finishing industry. Powder coatings perform better and last longer than traditional wet paints. Powder coatings are also more resistant to chips, scratches, wear and fading. Other benefits include reduced waste, easier clean-up, good barrier protection, reclaimable and reusable overspray. Powder coatings are environmentally friendly, too. Because they don’t need solvents, powder coatings don’t release volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) into the atmosphere.
But traditional powder coating does have drawbacks. First of all, the product that is being coated must be able to handle high temperatures for moderate periods of time. This means that powder coating temperature-sensitive materials such as wood or plastic is very difficult. And conventional powder coating is factory bound. Products that are to be coated must fit into the powder coater's oven. Larger equipment must be shut down, torn apart, hauled to the powder coaters, and then hauled back to the site and reassembled after coating. Oven-curing is a cumbersome and expensive process in terms of energy use, transport costs, and wait time--and there is the chance that the finished coating may be scratched or scuffed during transport. The need for oven-curing has, therefore, kept powder coating out of the mainstream.
Until now.
The Xiom 1000 System
The completely portable Xiom 1000 system weighs just 70 pounds and consists of a spray gun, powder feeder and control console. It can be used anywhere compressed air is available. The control console controls the flow of propane, oxygen and compressed air, as well as the delivery of the coating material. The gun, which permits users to start and stop the spraying process, diffuses the gases, forming a “perfect flame”. The flame heats the Xiom coatings to their melting point and sprays them onto a surface. Like a person that walks over hot coals with bare feet, the flame and molten plastic will be hot for only a few brief seconds before they cure and cool, so most materials aren’t harmed. Virtually any surface can be coated, even cardboard and other surfaces that would incinerate in a curing oven.
The Xiom 1000 system isn't meant to replace conventional powder coating systems. In fact, many traditional powder coaters have their own Xiom 1000 system operating alongside their ovens to provide total customer satisfaction.

Take Aim Against Surface Problems
Finishing or coating of surfaces can improve performance and aesthetics, extend useful life, and minimize costs. Xiom’s coatings line does all of this and more! Xiom’s coatings are more durable and weather resistant than liquid paints or traditional powder coatings and contain absolutely no VOCs.
Xiom’s coatings line is available in many colors and has a large number of uses. In fact, no matter what the surface problem is, Xiom has a solution! In addition to providing weatherproofing, Xiom’s coatings can be used to encapsulate arsenic in wood, provide for easy removable of graffiti, create non-slip surfaces and generally prolong the life of metal, glass, fiberglass, wood and concrete.
Xiom’s permanent glow-in-the-dark coating materials can ensure quick escape from burning buildings and nighttime visibility of road signs, pedestrians, bikers and vehicles. In addition, Xiom Corp. manufactures a line of powders for industrial release and grip coatings. With all these functions, you can see why we call the Xiom 1000 “The gun that protects your world.”
The Xiom 1000 system can apply coatings to any materials that can withstand a brief blast of heat. In general, the following materials can be coated with the Xiom 1000 system:
| Common Metals |
Common Building Materials |

FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions) |
How difficult is it to use the Xiom 1000 system? |
| The gun sets up and is ready to spray within minutes. The gun, the control console and the powder feeder are “plug and play.” All that’s required are a tank of propane, oxygen and an air compressor providing 20 CFM @ 90 PSI of air. |
Is it time consuming to change the color of the material? |
| Changing spray color is a two-minute process: blow the hopper and material hose out with air and you’re ready to go. |
What equipment is needed with the system? |
| The Xiom provided equipment: spray gun, control console, powder feeder and hoses. A customer supplied air compressor fitted with air cooling and drying equipment as well as oxygen and propane is also required. Breathing protection is recommended. For spraying in enclosed tanks, a forced air respirator is required. |
How much propane and oxygen does the system use? |
One 20-pound propane tank should last 20 hours. A 200 CFM “T” bottle of oxygen should last 8 hours. The oxygen consumption by stoliometric ratio is three units of oxygen to one unit of propane.
The flow rates are: 25 ScFh - Oxygen
8 ScFh – Propane |
What sort of nozzles come with the system? |
| There is a 1” to 3” oval nozzle and a 4” fan spray nozzle. |
How much area can be sprayed? |
| Not including surface preparation time, under optimal conditions, the Xiom 1000 system can cover 800 to 1,000 square feet a day. The coverage rate may vary based upon the type of substrate and ambient environmental conditions. |
How often do parts need to be replaced? |
| The nozzle may be replaced every four to six months. Everything else in the front end of the gun might need replacement once a year. For all other parts, normal wear and tear in deployment would be more likely than damaged parts in the actual spray process. In other words—maintenance costs are very low. |
Does Xiom offer any warranties? |
| One-year warranty on all parts and equipment. |
How much does it cost to purchase a system and materials? |
| If you have access to the required amounts of compressed air, oxygen and propane, the cost for Xiom 1000 equipment and a typical mix of powder materials to start is less than 10,000 USD. Please click here to contact your regional distributor for exact prices and availability.. |
How do Xiom's coatings compare to traditional powder coatings? |
| Our cost is about one third that of powder coating on a per square foot basis. However, powder coaters can do many more square feet at the same time by utilizing their large oven facilities. One good comparison can be seen with electrical conduit. Xiom is automating the spraying of electrical conduit for powder coaters who now do this with their oven set process. Xiom’s process can put down 40 mils instantly. The oven process is a three-cycle in-and-out-of-the-oven process. For spray applications, the Xiom 1000 is the best. For coat hangers, for example, powder coating would be advantageous. |
| Is it difficult to learn how to use the system? |
| A good operator after three days of training can develop a basic level of proficiency. Further practice and experimentation to develop the appropriate skill for more complex applications may be required. |
| Is there any instruction or training available? |
| Every Xiom 1000 system comes complete with an equipment and coatings manual. In addition, a three day training class, currently offered at Xiom's NY facility, is included in the price of the Xiom system purchase. In the future, Xiom intends to make available a training institute to provide instruction in advance application techniques as well. |
